Meal Planning 101

Today I have a very special treat for all of you. My sweet friend Amanda is here today to give you all a lesson in Meal Planning 101. Now let me tell you something. I'm a college student and I have taken a few "101" classes in the past year and a half. None of those were about meal planning, but they totally should have been.

Think about it...a college student on my own for the first time and realizing I have to cook, clean, AND do my own laundry. I definitely could have used some of these tips. Oh and did I mention that Amanda considers chips and guac to be a complete meal...how can you NOT love her?!

Hi y'all! My  name is Amanda and I'm the creative mind
behind
Royal Daughter Designs. This is me:
I'm a country girl, farming and ranching on 8 beautiful Texas acres. My husband, Mr. E., is a minister and a seminary professor and  I'm a small business owner and graduate student. I'm a has-been foster moma self-proclaimed animal lover, laundry procrastinator, sweet tea junkie, and high-heel hater.

In an attempt to simplify my life I try to be diligent to menu plan every week. Several months ago I got really motivated and menu planned for a whole month! It was such a blessing to come home and not have to wonder what in the world I was going to fix for supper.

Here's five tips for implementing menu planning in your home:

Meal Planning 101: by Royal Daughter Designs

1. Find out what you have. I know I'm not the only one who has a pantry full of perfectly good food. Yet for some reason I tend to let it just sit there looking pretty (or pretty cluttered, in my case) while thinking nothing of making a grocery store run for much needed supplies. Case in point: pasta. I have a ton of different types of pasta. But I replace spaghetti noodles like nobody's business. Cork screw, bowtie, and elbow noodles are often forgotten - that is until I take inventory and realize that there's nothing wrong with bowtie alfredo.

If you're feeling really brave: plan a whole week's worth of menus based on only the inventory you already have. No grocery shopping and no eating out. Do you think you can do it?

2. Plan meals based on seasonal fruits and vegetables. My husband and I love fresh fruits and vegetables. And in-season produce is much cheaper (and much healthier) than out-of-season produce. I plan my weekly menus based on which fresh fruits and veggies I know I'll be able to find at the grocery store.

Meal Planning 101: by Royal Daughter Designs

3. Plan meals that use similar ingredients. Since it's just the two of us I often have left overs, and let me tell you, I am not a leftover eater. But I also don't throw out food, so I plan menus that call for like ingredients. For example, if I plan on spaghetti early in the week, I'll plan homemade pizza later that week. That allows me to use up the ingredients without having leftovers.

4. Try something new. I'm not a very good pinterest-er, but I do utilize the site for saving new recipes that I know I'll want to make. Trying new recipes not only adds diversity to the menu, but it keeps things from getting too boring in the kitchen. I also have several cookbooks that I flip through every week looking for a new recipe. I generally select recipes that call for ingredients that I keep on hand, I really don't want to buy a random ingredient that will go bad before I use it again.

5. Have a few go-to meals. I'll be honest. Sometimes I don't stick to the menu plan. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for whatever is on the menu. Other times I'm just too tired, or I don't have enough time, to spend in the kitchen creating a scrumptious dinner. I have a handful of meals that are super easy and for which I know I'll always have the ingredients. Tacos, lentil soup, and open-faced veggie sandwiches are a few of my go-to meals when I'm lacking inspiration. And when all else fails, chips & guac is always an option. Can I get an amen?

Meal Planning 101: by Royal Daughter Designs

I don't know about you, but one of my least favorite chores is doing the dishes. Today I'm giving away one of my original prints that I created as a not-so-subtle hint for my husband:

And since you can't all be a winner, here's a little something to help jump start your meal planning adventure, inspired by Danielle!

Happy meal planning, and good luck! Thanks Danielle for sharing your blog with me today!

This week is going to one of those weeks.

The kind of week where you're staying up late just to get things done.
For every one thing you cross off your to-do list, another two things get added.
The homework, the lab sessions, and studying for exams never seems to stop around here.

I'm working my butt of this week.
I'm anxiously awaiting for Friday so that I can have time to relax.
Some retail therapy, a nice warm bath, and catching up on my Hulu queque.
Painting my nails, baking some cookies, and curling up with a blanket on the couch.
Doing next week's grocery shopping while enjoying a warm Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte.

Sometimes we need a break and I'm realizing lately that it's okay to do just that.
The e-mails that need replies, the dirty dishes in the sink, the laundry...it can all wait.
It can all wait until tomorrow. Or maybe...
It can wait a little while longer. Let's say, next week?

WIWW: Falling for Blazers

Blazer: c/o Sheinside | V-neck: Ralph Lauren | Jeans: XXI | Clutch: Missionary Kerrie's
Scarf: Target | Watch & Bracelets: Charming Charlies | Boots: Target

I am absolutely falling in love with blazers. They are so easy to dress up or down.
As of now, I only own a few but I plan on expanding my collection in the upcoming weeks.
They are the perfect statement piece. Pair them with skinny jeans and boots and you're all set.

Speaking of fall...weather around here is finally starting to cool off.
It is feeling more like fall each and every day and it makes me so so happy.
Fall is my favorite season for quite a few reasons. Here are just a few of them...

1. Starbucks Pumpkin Spice lattes. Enough said.

2. Cardigans, skinny jeans, and scarves -- my three wardrobe staples.

3.  Fall polishes like Illamasqua Purity (in photos above) and other peach & neutral tones.

4. Seeing all the different styles of cognac boots that girls are wearing on campus.
(Side Story: Just yesterday, I saw a girl wearing brown boots that had a red zipper in the back. I was so so tempted to ask where she got them.)

5. The joy of knowing that fall break is right around the corner. I could really use a few days off.

What are your favorite things about fall?

Me, Myself, And I: September

Welcome back for another month of the Me, Myself, and I link-up! So sorry my post is a little late today...please forgive me! It's been a crazy busy weekend here.

If you're unfamiliar with this link-up, you can check out my July and August editions. Then create your post and link up with us so that we can all learn more about you!

1. When you're feeling down, what do you do to pick yourself up?
This is a no-brainer for me. I grab a bar of Godiva chocolate, get into a nice warm bath and watch re-runs of Grey's Anatomy. It does the trick every single time. Oh, and did I mention online shopping?!

2. If you had to live in a different time period, which would you prefer?
Oh goodness. I'd have to say the 90's. I know that may sound lame but I'd love to go back to my childhood when Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls were all the rage.

3. What is the most creative Halloween costume you've ever worn?
I am so not creative when it comes to costumes. In fact, I was a witch for three years in a row if that tells you anything. Halloween was never really my favorite holiday either.

4. Five weird things about you we wouldn't know without being told?

a. I put ketchup on my macaroni and cheese. It's a Canadian thing.
b. I love painting my nails but almost always mess them up within minutes.
c. I see no problem with owning 18 scarves. Who's counting?
d. I am so not a pet person but I think they're cute to look at.
e. I am absolutely terrible about shaving my legs. Gross, but true.

5. What would you tell your 16-year-old self?
Don't be afraid to go out on a week night to spend time with your friends. Soon you'll all be spread out over the USA to attend different colleges and you'll lose touch.

So what are you waiting for? Link up with us and grab a button!

My Name is Danielle And...

Last month I signed up for a nail polish swap hosted by the fabulous Rachel and Carly. I was so excited to be paired up and as you all know...my name is Danielle and I'm a nail polish addict.

I was paired up with Kristen who blogs at The Wright Stuff. She's an absolutely amazing lady and we've connected so much in the past month.

We exchanged tweets and emails to help each other buy the perfect polishes. Needless to say, Kristen went ABOVE and beyond for me. All the polishes she sent me are amazing. I had never tried Illamasqua or NARS and Kristen was so generous to send me one of each along with some others!

I've already used the Illamasqua one and absolutely loved it. The peachy color was perfect, the formula was creamy, and it's been 4 days with no chipping!

To see what I sent Kristen, be sure to hop on over to her blog! And thanks again to the two fabulous hosts who put this whole swap together!

My Fall Essentials

First off, I just want to thank all of you who entered the Create Your Own Marsh contest! Tookies, Bryce, and I had so much fun collaborating together on this amazing opportunity. However, this contest wouldn't have been possible without all of your amazing suggestions!!

Bryce, our *expert* marshmallow judge has picked his TWO favorite flavors to be created by the Tookies shop. Jeni suggested Maple Candy Bacon and Torie who suggested Brownie Turtle. These two flavors will be created by Tookies in the upcoming weeks and handed over to Bryce for the ultimate taste test!! The winner will receive a 1/2 dozen of their creation to enjoy and devor!!

Also, congratulations to Sandy for winning the 1/2 dozen of Mix-it-Up marshmallows!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't about you, but each and every day I'm getting more excited for fall. The other night I made a Forever 21 purchase for a few cardigans. Then, I bought two new Butter London nail polishes (pefect for fall) thanks to the BOGO sale at ULTA. Oh, and did I mention Starbucks has brought back their Pumpkin Spice lattes?

Now I'm craving cardigans, scarves, and skinny jeans -- my three wardrobe staples. I've also had a few things on my wishlist like a striped sweater, leopard belt, and a navy fitted blazer.

Losing Control

Top: Kohl's | Skirt: XXI fall 2011 | Necklace: c/o Cheerfully Charmed | Sandals: Target (old)
Psst: Cheerfully Charmed statement necklaces are BUY 2, GET 1 FREE

If you knew me...and I mean really knew me...
You'd first know that this is one of the days that I actually dressed up this week.
You'd also know that there's one little thing I struggle with on a daily basis.
It's a constant battle and has turned this one little thing into something so much bigger.

Control. I have to have it.
Lately that hasn't been the case and it makes me crazy.
The past few days I feel like I've literally been losing my mind.
With two exams to study for this week and an overflowing inbox, I feel like I'm losing it.

Losing control of my blog and losing control of the direction I want it to go in.
Everytime I open my inbox, I see all the unread ones and feel obligated to answer right away.
I'm losing control of my blog, my emails, but most importantly...my life.

I'm a Type A person to the tee.
I like everything organized, planned out, and absolutely perfect.
I love the control of doing everything myself. I hate leaving things up to others.
I have serious control issues and lately I've been so caught up in wanting to control everything.

I need to keep reminding myself to take a step back.
It's okay to take a break from blogging.
It's okay not to reply to an email until tomorrow.
But most importantly, it's okay to take some time for myself.
It's okay to ask for help and to turn to others who are offering it.

I'm not superwoman and I can't do it all, especially with a full school schedule.
I've considered looking for someone to help out with my blog and e-mails.
However, there is still a huge part of me that doesn't want to give up that control.
When is enough is enough? When do you look to others for help?

Linking up for Desire to Inspire.

Hello Monday

Goodbye summer. Hello fall. Hello autumn.
I cannot tell you all how excited I am for the weather to cool down.
It's been 90+ degrees here every single day this summer and I've hated every minute.
I can't wait to bust out my three wardrobe staples -- cardigans, scarves, and skinny jeans.

Hello to bathroom decorating.
I've had this empty glass bowl and have been looking for the perfect filler.
I finally found some beach potpourri and a fabulous wood tray for my hair essentials too.
Have you tried Bumble & bumble? I just recently did and I am so in love with their hairspray!

Hello "Fashion Inspiration" pinboard.
I come to you for a virtual place of inspiration when I'm in a fashion funk.
I'm planning on DIY-ing an actual pinboard of sorts to hang on my bedroom wall.
A place where I can collect my fashion inspiration and see it in front of me on a daily basis.

Hello custom art print.
The fabulous Jacy drew up this print of Q and I.
I think she did an amazing job and it looks so pretty on my nightstand.
It's new home is perfect next to my succulents, candle, and perfume collection!

Hello to my new Starbucks creation.
Iced White Mocha + 2 pumps of raspberry.
I'm enjoying the last few weeks of ice cold drinks.
Then I'll be ordering a warm Pumpkin Spice Latte with extra whip!

Hello to my new favorite love -- blazers!
I've only ever owned one. It's black with white pinstripes.
I'm hoping to add a few more (grey? neutral? brights?) to my wardrobe soon.
Speaking of wardrobe...I can't wait to start wearing all of these bright colored tops!

Hello to new starts.

The start of a brand new week.
And the start of a new school year.
This is my fresh start to turn things around and really work my butt off.
To focus more on school, family, and work...and less on blogging.
To start focusing on my pharmacy career and doing whatever it takes.
My first organic chemistry exam is this Thursday, please wish me good luck!

I'm linking up for Hello Monday.

Create Your Own Marsh Contest

I've been holding in a BIG secret for a long time now and it's been killing me! I am so glad because today I get to fill you all in on something special that I've been working on. As you all know, I adore Tookies. Not only are their desserts yummy, but the family behind the shop is always doing amazing things. Oh and did I mention they run their own blog too?

Did you know that a 10 year old boy is the inspiration behind some of the fabulous marshmallows creations? He's only ten and he's creating flavors for the Tookies shop. Here's how it all started...

Bryce and his mom first stumbled upon the Tookies shop while she was searching for t-shirt quilts on Etsy. Her and Bryce both drooled over the items in the shop for a few weeks before placing their first order. They ordered some cookie-wiches and jar cakes and the sweet people at Tookies had included a surprise sample of peppermint marsmallows. They loved the marshmallows so much and continued to place more orders!

Tookies & Bryce present: "Create Your Own Marsh" CONTEST!!

Then before Christmas, Bryce's mom had asked him what was something he wanted in his stocking and he said Tookies marshmallows! He really wanted to find out if they could create a Cotton Candy flavor so his mom sent a message to Tookies. Sure enough, they came up with the marshmallow and sent samples to Bryce...he absolutely LOVED them!

Tookies & Bryce present: "Create Your Own Marsh" CONTEST!!

Since then, Bryce has continued to suggest many flavors which have turned into marshmallows sold in the Tookies shop. Cotton Candy, Rowdy Root Beer, and Country Candy Apple are just a few that Bryce has created. In fact, the first marshmallow I tried was the Bryce's Rowdy Root Beer but I had no idea that Bryce was the amazing person behind it! The newest Bryce creation is the Caramel Vanilla milkshake seen below...doesn't that look YUMMY?!

Tookies & Bryce present: "Create Your Own Marsh" CONTEST!!

Bryce and his mother have been such a HUGE part of the Tookies family! Today I'm teaming up with Tookies and Bryce to host a "Create Your Own Marsh" contest! Now you have a chance at creating your own marshmallow! Here's how it works...

-- Simply, enter the contest via the Rafflecopter widget below. The only MANDATORY entry is that you leave a blog post comment with what flavor you'd want created if you won the contest!!

-- By submitting your flavor, you'll be entering yourself for the chance to win a 1/2 dozen of Mix-it-up marshmallows. This winner will be picked randomly via the Rafflecopter widget.

You can earn extra entries by following the Tookies shop and blog, following the Framed Frosting blog, and our other social media links too. You can also earn additional entries by sharing this contest with your friends and family. Spread the word and see who can come up with the best creation!!

You have until Wed. Sept. 12th to submit your "Create Your Own Marsh" flavor.
Bryce will pick his 2 favorite flavors which will be announced on Fri. Sept 14th.

Those 2 flavors will then be created by the Tookies shop and handed over to Bryce, the "marshmallow expert" so he can taste-test them and pick his favorite as the winner!

The winner of the "Create Your Own Marsh" contest will be mailed a 1/2 dozen of their creation to enjoy! Their creation will also be sold in the Tookies shop for a limited time!
