This DIY Ornament Advent Calendar is a great way to decorate your tree! After 24 days, you will have a tree filled with special memories and events.
This is Q and I’s first Christmas together and we have 0 ornaments to decorate our tree so I came up with the idea of doing an ornament advent calendar. I thought it would be a great way to trim our tree with special ornaments rather than a set of colored ornaments from a store.
I shopped at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, a local Christmas store, and online to buy various ornaments for our tree. Each ornament represents a memory or reminds us of someone or something we love. For example, some of the ornaments represent a trip we took, an important milestone (like moving in together and getting engaged!), our favorite hobbies, and then I bought us each of us an ornament to remind us of our parents.
To create the ornament advent calendar, I bought a bunch of kraft bags from Hobby Lobby and used a gold leaf pen to write the number on each bag. I bought 20 ornaments and put them in random bags with some white tissue paper. Q also did the same for the remaining 4 ornaments. To keep all of our ornaments together, I bought this storage bin from Hobby Lobby and it’s worked out great! It holds all of the bags and they are organized in numerical order.
Each night we have enjoyed opening the ornament of the day and picking the right spot for it on our tree. I will admit that our tree looks a little bare right now since we are only 6 days in, but after 24 days we will have a tree filled with ornaments that represent us.
Here’s a look at our ornaments so far…
Day 1 – technically our 2-bedroom duplex isn’t a home, but it’s SO much better than a small apartment!
Day 2 – this year Q said goodbye to his cubicle and hello to a big ol’ office.
Day 3 – Q’s alma mater
Day 4 – an ornament to remind me of my mom. She loves snowmen ornaments and when I found this one, I knew I just had to buy it.
Day 5 – an ornament to remind Q of his parents who own a greenhouse and have the most gorgeous poinsettias.
Day 6 – an ornament to mark the most important date of 2015. It’s even customized with our proposal date & location!
Each week, I will update this post with photos of our new ornaments and then on December 24th, I will add a photo of our finished tree!
